The operation of Sussex Neighbourhood House is run on a day-to-day basis by paid employees, contractors and volunteers.

Members & Memberships

Becoming a member is a great way to support the ongoing future of Sussex Neighbourhood House.

Membership is about becoming a part of the Sussex Neighbourhood House community and entitles you to many benefits including:

  • Voting right at the AGM and free life membership after 10 years.
  • Ability to nominate other members for election to the Committee of Management at the Annual General meeting.
  • One free trial session per term (subject to availability, exclusions apply).
  • Ability to nominate other members for election to the Committee of Management at the Annual General meeting.

Membership to Sussex Neighbourhood House is applied and paid for on an annual calendar basis.

Our Committee

Sussex Neighbourhood House Inc. is a not-for-profit, incorporated organisation, governed by a constitution and managed by a volunteer committee of governance.

The Committee of Governance is elected by Sussex Neighbourhood House members at the Annual General Meeting in October each year.

The Committee meets every third Tuesday of the Month and is guided by our CONSTITUTION.

 CoG guidance provides information on joining the local Committee of Governance.

Joining the Committee

The SNH Committee of Governance consists of a group of committed and passionate local people, who volunteer their time to govern the Neighbourhood House.

Eligibility to be elected or appointed as a committee member:
Must be a Member of SNH (Membership Form) and pay $8; and

  • Must be 15 years or older, and;
  • Entitled to vote at the General Meeting; and
  • Works, resides in, has a strong connection to the City of Merri-bek, or provides a relevant skill and/or knowledge to the committee

What does the Committee of Governance do? 

The Committee governs SNH Inc. and sets its overall strategic direction, mission and values. It is accountable for all matters pertaining to SNH and is responsible for monitoring financial and organisational viability and compliance with all legal obligations. We are guided by our Constitution

Committee Members attend monthly meetings and actively contribute to the collective decision-making of the Board to further the interest of SNH and oversee the work of paid employees, volunteers and programs of the House.

We are looking for NEW board members to join our team and ensure the sustainability of the organisation, with a variety of professional skills and/or local knowledge.

We welcome members who will bring to our CoG diversity of age, cultural and linguistic background including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, religion, sexuality, ability and life experiences.

How do I go about it? 

If you are interested in nominating for our board, please submit an expression of interest to chairperson@sussexnh.org.au with your full name and contact details. We will contact you with the information and documentation you need to join our board.

How do I become a Member?

  1. Complete the 2025 Membership Form and return it to enquiries@sussexnh.org.au
  2. Pay a $8 Membership Fee

Our Statement of Aims

Sussex NH statement of aims states our commitment to the following

  • To encourage the local residents to become more fully involved in community life and develop their own responses and solutions to issues and problems which affect their own community.
  • To reduce the social isolation of individuals and groups within the community.
  • To facilitate and encourage the development of personal neighbourhood networks.
  • To provide resources, information and personal support to people within the community.
  • To address social inequalities and increase life opportunities for people who are disadvantaged, upholding the principles of equality, access, participation and social justice for all the community, irrespective of religion, ethnicity, race, gender, age, disability and socio-economic status.
  • To initiate, organise, sponsor or encourage social, recreation and education activities, seminars, information sessions, workshops and similar activities among all members of the community.
