Every week, we welcome people of all ages and backgrounds into our programs, activities, volunteer roles, and social spaces. These everyday interactions help build confidence, reduce isolation, strengthen resilience, and foster a sense of belonging.
Across Victoria, Neighbourhood Houses play a vital role in community wellbeing. They are local, accessible, and responsive to the needs of the people who walk through the door. As needs have grown in recent years, Neighbourhood Houses have continued to show up and adapt, offering support in ways that are practical, inclusive, and community-led.
94-96% of participants said the activity they participated in at their local NH had a positive or very positive impact on their physical and emotional wellbeing, and on their social connections.
However, despite this increasing demand, the core funding that sustains Neighbourhood Houses has not kept pace. Many houses are now providing more services with fewer resources, and nearly half are operating at a financial loss. Without sustainable funding, the ability to continue delivering these essential community programs is at risk.
The Keep Our Doors Open campaign is a statewide initiative led by Neighbourhood Houses Victoria. It calls for a 25% increase to core funding for Neighbourhood Houses across the state. This increase would ensure that houses like ours can continue to meet community need, retain skilled staff, and provide safe, welcoming and inclusive spaces for everyone.
At SNH, we have set up a campaign station in our hub. Community members are invited to fill out postcards sharing what Sussex means to them – postcards which will then be delivered to our local representatives as part of the campaign to advocate for sustainable, long-term funding.
We would like to acknowledge Anthony Cianflone MP for his ongoing support of our community and the neighbourhood house sector. We are also calling on Ros Spence MP to support the campaign and recognise the essential role that Neighbourhood Houses play in the health, strength, and connectedness of Victorian communities.
If SNH has been meaningful to you – whether through programs, volunteering, social connection, or simply as a welcoming place to belong – your voice can make a difference. We invite you to
These messages help show the real value of community-led spaces and the importance of keeping them open and accessible.
Our commitment is to continue being a supportive, inclusive, and welcoming place for everyone who walks through our door. Sustainable funding is essential to ensuring we can keep doing this, not just now, but for years to come.
When community spaces remain open, everyone benefits.
At Sussex Neighbourhood House, we know that sometimes the most meaningful support comes from sitting down together, talking things through, and taking the time to understand a situation fully. Recently, we’ve seen just how powerful this can be through the Power Saving Bonus initiative.
In October, we welcomed the Minister for Energy Lily D’Ambrosio and local MP Anthony Cianflone to SNH to hear directly from community members about their experiences with rising energy costs and the support available to assist with household bills. This visit highlighted the important role community organisations play in making cost-of-living relief programs accessible to everyone.
The PSB is not just a $100 rebate. When we sit together with a bill, we often find additional savings:
One recent example saw a family move from applying for a $100 rebate to discovering over $1,000 in annual savings, along with $4,500+ in backdated concession credits after reviewing their plan and support eligibility.
These outcomes happen because someone took the time to explain the bill, make a phone call together, and help advocate for what the customer is entitled to.
If you have a concession card and are paying the electricity bill at your residence, you may be eligible for the $100 PSB. We can help you:
Simply bring along your latest electricity bill, concession card, medicare card, and bank details.
Neighbourhood Houses like SNH play a vital role in providing practical, in-person support that meets people where they are. We are proud to continue offering this service and thank Minister D’Ambrosio and Anthony Cianflone MP for acknowledging the work being done across local communities.
Thank you to the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action and Neighbourhood Houses Victoria for making this initiative possible.
If you or someone you know could benefit from this help, please drop in or give us a call to make a time to apply.
We’re here for our community.
For 2025 Get Online Week, we had the pleasure of hosting a very special event in collaboration with Year 9 students from Pascoe Vale Girls College.
The goal was simple: support older community members to build confidence in navigating the digital world. But what unfolded was something far more meaningful.
We paired up students with participants, smartphones in hand, notes being jotted down, gentle conversations unfolding. There was laughter, curiosity, and that lovely quiet focus that happens when two people are genuinely learning from one another.
What made the day memorable wasn’t just the practical skills gained (how to use apps, organise photos, or understand online forms), the real magic came from the exchange.
Our over-50s participants showed openness, patience, and a willingness to try new things, even when technology can feel overwhelming. The Pascoe Vale Girls students brought confidence, clarity, and a natural digital fluency, but also empathy, respect, and leadership beyond their years.
Two generations met in the middle, both left with new skills, and new perspectives.
This is lifelong learning at its best: neighbours supporting neighbours, stories being shared, and different strengths being recognised.
We are incredibly proud of the PV Girls students for the way they handled the day with maturity, kindness, and enthusiasm. And we are equally proud of our participants who continue to show that learning has no age limit.
A heartfelt thank you to everyone involved.
We look forward to more of these exchanges in the future!

While our AGM was underway, our incredible volunteers were representing SNH at the 2025 Merri-bek Community Awards where we were proud to receive a High Commendation for the Environmental Sustainability Achievement Award.
This recognition highlights years of grassroots effort from volunteers, partners, and community members who have worked hand-in-hand to make sustainable living more accessible, practical, and community-led.
Over the past four years, SNH has expanded its sustainability initiatives across Pascoe Vale and beyond: from the community garden and recycling collections, to the Pascoe Vale Food Collective and Repair Cafe. These projects, along with partnerships like the Merri-bek E-bike Library, Merri Community Shed, and Jesuit Ecological Hub, have inspired change across the community by showing how small actions can create big impact.
At the heart of this success are our dedicated garden volunteers – Rob, Cheryl, Peter, and Jeanette – whose hard work and passion have transformed our grounds into a thriving, welcoming space that grows both produce and connection.
“Together, these collaborative efforts strengthen local action on climate and waste, foster community engagement, and create practical pathways for reducing environmental impact in Merri-bek” – from the award submission.
This High Commendation is a reflection of a community that truly cares. One where neighbours share knowledge, repair instead of replace, and support one another to live more sustainably.
Congratulations to our volunteers and partners. Your hands have built something lasting, and your work continues to inspire everyone at Sussex.
On Wednesday 15 October, SNH held its 2025 AGM, bringing together members, partners, and friends to celebrate a year of community conneciton and to introduce our Strategic Plan 2026-2029.
The evening reflected the true heart of the House; a place built by people who care, and sustained by the shared values of inclusion, learning, and belonging. We were delighted to be joined by Ben from Inner North Community Foundation, and Uzma from Celebrating and Connecting Cultures, who helped us mark the occasion with warmth and encouragement.
One of the evening’s most meaningful moments was celebrating Claire Martin, whose 20 years of service to SNH have shaped the organisation we know today.
From her first day volunteering in 2005, to her leadership as Chair of the Committee, Claire has given her time, energy, and heart to this community. Her journey, captured beautifully in her speech and presentation, tells the story of two decades of transformation, teamwork, and purpose.
Claire reflected on how the House has grown from a small community hub to a thriving centre of learning and connection.
“It wasn’t just about getting things done, it was about how we do it together. The future is not something that simply arrives; it’s something we shape, together.”
In recognition of her extraordinary contribution, we proudly announce the naming of the “Claire Martin Room”, a lasting tribute to her leadership and the spirit of welcome she’s fostered for so many years.

The new Strategic Plan 2026-2029 builds on this legacy, focusing on community connection, partnerships, people and processes. Together, we’ll continue to strengthen Sussex Neighbourhood House as a place where every person feels they belong, can grow, and can contribute to a vibrant and connected neighbourhood.
Thank you to everyone who joined us, both in person and online, to celebrate another remarkable year at Sussex 💚
