Learn to Sew with Yan: Sewing Foundations in Pascoe Vale

Would you like to learn how to sew but aren’t sure where to begin?

Sewing Foundations is a practical five-week course for beginners who want to feel more confident using a sewing machine and learn the essential skills needed to start creating their own projects.

Led by experiened seamstress Yan Tang So, the course will guide you through setting up and using your machine, practicing different types of seams and applying your new skills to a series of simple sewing projects.

What will I learn in this beginner sewing course?

Across the five sessions, Yan will help you build your sewing skills from the ground up.

You’ll learn how to:

Set up and operate a sewing machine
Sew a variety of useful seams
Use essential sewing tools and materials
Follow the steps involved in completing a simple project
Apply foundational techniques to practical items

By the end of the course, you’ll have a portfolio of seams and techniques to refer back to. You’ll also make a scrunchie, tote bag, placemat, and apron, giving you the opportunity to practice your skills while creating something useful.

This course is designed to give you a solid foundation for continuing to sew at home and, eventually, bringing more of your own ideas and personal style to life.

Meet your sewing teacher

Yan Tang So is an experienced seamstress with a passion for sharing practical sewing skills.

A sewing machine (if you have one)
Fabric
Thread
Sewing scissors
Pins
A tape measure
A stitch ripper or quick unpick
Notepad & pencil
A pin cushion, if you have one

Dates: Wednesdays, 19 August to 16 September

Duration: 5 sessions, once a week until Term 3-end
