arts-making community gathering

Creating a Holding Space to Tell your Story. 12.30pm to 3.30pm

Fourteen creatives come together, to form our community artistic collective. We settled in to create individual Holding Spaces, knotted, textile-based spaces, formed with (or without) a crochet hook. Their purpose is to hold life stories.

As the spaces formed in hands and fingers their creators brought their attention to “what neighbourhood means to me?” What stories of neighbourhood experiences would be held in their Holding Spaces.

As Holding Spaces were completed their stories were written…

And shared.

Focus was brought to each Holding Space and it’s held story. Holding Spaces were shown (often determining how their creator would prefer them to be seen – sitting, hanging) and each story read aloud.

The group noted down any keywords / phrases that stood out to them, during this time of sharing, on little pieces of paper.

We shared these with each other.
This is what we came to know now about “what neighbourhood means to us”.

lots of spaces & sizes
taking time to talk
not being really busy
womb of community
connected
waiting to connect through my front yard
the really fine stuff takes ages to build up
threads connect even if distantly
people come and go
get to know other intentionally or not
what was there before
we share
we appreciate
delicate and unformed
we come together
taking time

to build up
we share
we connect
we interact
even when we are not aware of it
